The La Ronge Children’s Day Celebrations returned to Canada Day after a several years hiatus, July 1.

It began early with a Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Town of La Ronge in the Tennis Court in Patterson Park.

People then made their way either to participate or find a shady spot along the route to get a good view of the Canada Day Parade.

Beginning this year on English Avenue, the colourful parade, led by the La Ronge Regional Fire Department and RCMP, made its way down La Ronge Avenue to Patterson Park. Included in the parade were many colourful floats, sponsored by local organizations and businesses, followed by floats, cyclists and walkers.

Although there was a fair bit of red and white in the parade and crowds, orange was also prevalent colour among the crowd, in memory of Residential School survivors and those lost to the schools.

The result – a colourful stream down La Ronge Avenue to Patterson Park.

A variety of food choices was available at the Park following the parade. Of note – the La Ronge Senior’s Centre, where members made burgers and hot dogs available to a large number of the Canada Day celebrants. Folks settled back in the shade of the trees in Patterson Park to enjoy the entertainment. The program included: the singing of O Canada in English and Cree; Singing with Sylvia comedy and magic by Kazam Entertainment; Jigging and Square Dance presentations by Northern Prairie Dancers; and local entertainment included music by Tamara Layton Putz and her daughters, Amelia and Lauren.
