Prince Albert Concert Band presents first small ensemble concert

For the first time the Prince Albert Concert Band is performing not as a single unit, but as multiple smaller ensembles.

“I was thinking about how we hear the sound of the full band most often in our concerts and each group has a different kind of, we call it ‘tone colour,’ that is unique to that group of instruments and sometimes it’s just a treat to hear those instruments apart from the rest of the band,” P.A. Concert Band director Kathleen Clarke said.

“And it occurred to me that we could do a recital type of program where we could feature each group and have a chance to listen to the different tone colours the way that they blend apart from the other instruments.”

The show, called Music to Warm the Soul, will take place at the John M. Cuelenaere Public Library auditorium on Saturday night. This is the first time the Concert Band is using the space and Clarke said the 157-seat venue will suit the music well.

“This concert will have a really cozy feel because the seats are nice and close to the stage and the stage isn’t huge. It’ll be just the perfect size for each of our small ensembles and it’ll be easy for the musicians to fill the space with their sound,” she said.
