The man who has been accused of manslaughter in the July 14 death of Darwin Naytowhow, 48, was granted bail Thursday.
Ryan Kyle Daniels, 40, appeared via video Thursday afternoon. A large contingent of family members sat in the front row in support. Daniels and his family members waved at each other as he was led away following the conclusion of the hearing.
Daniels said little during his appearance, nodding along at times with the evidence read aloud in court.
The evidence and arguments presented Thursday, along with the reasons given by the judge, are covered by a publication ban.
The hearing was delayed by a few hours. It was originally scheduled to occur Thursday morning, however the Crown had yet to receive evidence from the RCMP.
It was adjourned to later in the afternoon for the Crown to receive the details it needed to present its arguments in the bail hearing.
Daniels’ next appearance is set for August 14 at 1:30 p.m.
Police and EMS responded to a call for assistance about an unresponsive man at a Sturgeon Lake First Nation residence on July 14.
When EMS arrived, they declared Naytowhow deceased. The preliminary investigation determined the cause of death to be suspicious. An autopsy was conducted on July 18.
The investigation was conducted by the RCMP’s Major Crime Unit South with the assistance of Prince Albert and Tisdale Forensic Identification Section and the Saskatchewan Coroner’s Service.
