Although they’ve won five Western Women’s Canadian Football League championships and made it to the league final this year against the Regina Riot, the Saskatoon Valkyries are always on the lookout for new talent.
With that in mind, the team will be holding their first ever fall camp at Max Clunie Field next Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“We definitely want to help grow the league as much as we can, especially here in Prince Albert,” Valkyries general manager Michelle Duchene said.
“We already have two players on the team this year (Nichole LaVallee and Ashley Vikland) who make the trip down to Saskatoon three or four times a week during the regular season, and it would be fantastic if we could get some more players from Prince Albert join them to go along with the other players that have come from there in the past.”
Saturday’s camp, which is for all women over the age of 14 and costs $35 to participate in, will have all equipment supplied to the participants and will also serve an introduction to the sport for those that haven’t played it.
“We’re starting things off with a Football 101 class session to go over the basic terms of football, which I think is something people take for granted at times when you are trying to explain the game to someone that’s new to it,” Duchene said.
“After that, we’re going to head out on to the field with Nicole and Ashley leading way, along with our head coach Pat Barry.”
