P.A. amateur golfers finish strong at provincials, will compete at national competition in August

Local amateur golfers Cory Selander and Danny Klughart will tee up for Team Saskatchewan after picking up silver and bronze medals this week at the Access Communications Saskatchewan Amateur Men’s Championship in Yorkton.

Selander and Klughart, who both golf at Cooke Municipal Golf Course, finished in a four-way tie for second place with 287 points at the competition, one point behind winner Tyler Wright of Regina’s Wascana Country Club. Selander birdied on the first playoff hole to take the silver, while it took Klughart three playoff holes to secure the bronze.

Wright, Selander and Klughart will now represent Saskatchewan as they play for the Willingdon Cup at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship in Mississauga, Ont. from Aug. 7 to 10. The fourth-place finisher will join the team as an alternate and the next four ranked ranked players will compete in Mississauga as individuals.

“I was actually really happy with the way I played all four days. I was able to limit my mistakes and actually made a couple putts, which definitely helped push me through the week,” Selander said.

“I’ve played that course in the past and done well there so I like their layout and I knew if I could keep the ball in the golf course I’d have a good chance of finishing where I wanted to.”
