Softball championships earn another accolade

Daily Herald File Photo Team Canada salutes the crowd during the opening ceremonies of the 2018 WBSC Junior Men's Softball World Championship.

The awards just keep on coming for the organizers of the 2018 World Junior Men’s Softball Championships, held in Prince Albert last July.

Thursday, the province announced that the tournament had been named as the Tourism Saskatchewan Marquee Event of the Year. The award was accepted by co-chair Felix Casavant and finance Co-chair Brett Casavant. The championships were also a finalist for the Canadian Sport Event of the year at the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance Prestige Awards last month in Ottawa.

Tournament co-chairs Felix Casavant and Derek Smith were named the 2018 Citizens of the Year by the Daily Herald and the Kinsmen Club, while Project Triple Play, represented by Ian Litzenberger and Kalen Kovitch, was honoured as Sportsperson of the year.

The tournament is also up for a pair of Samuel McLeod Business Awards. They were announced as finalists in the marketing and community involvement categories last month.

“The 282 volunteers that executed the 2018 WBSC World Junior Men’s Softball Championships July 7-15 at Max Power Ball Parks were recognized April 11th when that event was named the Tourism Saskatchewan Marquee Event of the Year in Saskatoon,” the City of Prince Albert wrote in a media advisory sent out to recognize Volunteer Week.
