Country music returns to MacDowall as Hillbilly Homestead opens for the summer

Hillbilly Homestead proprietor Audrey Neubuhr said when it comes to booking musicals acts, “We just kind of let the people decide what we should be doing.”

It’s been two years since Neubuhr and Wally L’Heureux converted a cabin on their property north of MacDowall into a country music venue, a long-held ambition of Neubuhr’s.

“Definitely something that I’ve always hoped to do is perform myself and have a little venue like this and now that it’s coming true it’s just like, ‘Wow, what else is possible?’” said Neubuhr, a singer and autoharp player who is known in the area for her impression of old-time country music comedienne Minnie Pearl.

“I think we have something very unique and very lasting because everything that’s old is new again.”

Since opening Hillbilly Homestead in 2015 the pair has been learning how to attract musicians and spectators to the makeshift performance space.

“We’re finding out what people are willing to drive out and listen to just based on the numbers of some of the concert that we’ve had,” Neubuhr said.

“So now we’re focusing more on what people seem to want to hear, so we have more concerts featuring several artists instead of just one or two artists. They like a show, a real variety of entertainers. That’s what we saw last year for sure, so (we’ll) draw on those things and see if that’s going to work for this year.”
