Raiders score three goals in 90 seconds to knock off Oil Kings 5-2
After snapping an 11-game losing streak on Friday in Red Deer, the Prince Albert Raiders are starting to put some wins together.
Jordy Stallard and Curtis Miske both had two-point nights as the Raiders defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings 5-1 at Rogers Place on Saturday night.
“I liked our game. I thought we played with good energy and good structure and we played with good confidence and you get confidence from winning so (Friday night’s) win certainly helped,” Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said.
For the third-straight game the Raiders opened scoring early in the first period. This time it was Miske with the ice breaker, beating Edmonton netminder Patrick Dea seven-and-a-half minutes into the frame.
It was in the second period that P.A.’s skaters found their offence, scoring three goals in a one-and-a-half-minute span. First it was Stallard, scoring his fifth goal as a Raider. Now his team’s leading scorer, Stallard has nine points in seven games since arriving in P.A. Next up was Cavin Leth with his 12th goal of the year and Cole Fonstad with his eighth.
Habschied said the 4-0 lead gave his team “breathing room” heading into the final frame.
“You want the guys to have confidence and feel good about themselves, so that’s a good thing,” he said of the mid-game scoring spree.
The Fonstad tally meant the end of the night for Dea, who was pulled from the game having allowed four goals on 20 shots. Oil Kings backup goalie Josh Dechaine would finish the night.
Edmonton’s Davis Koch put his team on the board one minute into the final period, but Raider Sean Montgomery restored P.A.’s four-goal lead shortly thereafter. Oil King winger Ty Gerla added one last goal in the dying minutes of the game, bringing the final score to 5-2.
P.A. goalie Nicholas Sanders, who earned his first win as a Raider on Friday night, returned with another victorious performance, turning away 29 shots in the win.
The Raiders are back in action late Sunday afternoon when they meet the Hitmen in Calgary. Game time is 5 p.m.
