Prince Albert well represented on Team Saskatchewan

Daily Herald File Photo Prince Albert Mintos forward Gabe Klassen will be competing for Team Saskatchewan at the Canada Winter Games this month.

A strong contingent of athletes with connections to Prince Albert and the surrounding area will soon be representing the province on a national stage.

During a press conference in Regina Thursday, Team Sask announced the 215 athletes that will be taking part in this year’s Canada Winter Games, which will be held in Red Deer from Feb. 15 to March 3.

Four members of the Prince Albert Mintos will be competing in the men’s hockey event as Prince Albert products Logan Cox, Ashton Ferster, Gabe Klassen and Marek Schneider will be joined on the roster by Prince Albert Raiders draft picks Nolan Allan and Logan Linklater.

Allan, who is from Davidson, is playing for the Saskatoon Blazers this season, while Linklater, who is from Kindersley, is suiting up for the Swift Current Legionnaires.

Meanwhile, Prince Albert’s Abby Soyko will be part of the women’s hockey team with Prince Albert Northern Bears teammates Kate Bate, Miranda Heidt and Jadyn Kushniruk, who are all from Saskatoon.

Warman’s Jayda Sachs, who played with the Bears from 2014-16 before joining the Saskatoon Stars, is also on the roster.

The other Prince Albert athletes that will be competing in Red Deer area Jessica Gill (cross country skiing), Matthew Gill (cross country skiing), Kryztle Shewchuk (cross country skiing), Miranda Bellisle (judo), Jannessa Keays (judo) and Thomas Rusk (snowboarding).

Also taking part in the event will be Jessie Georget of Domremy (gymnastics) and Ashlyn Schmitz of Shellbrook (figure skating).

Skylar Ackerman’s curling rink from Moose Jaw, who competed at the Host Team during last week’s New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships, will also be making the trip to Red Deer.
