The Prince Albert Police Service has been asked to investigate whether a Battleford RCMP member committed an assault during a May arrest.
According to an RCMP press release, a “physical altercation” occurred between a constable and a 40-year-old man while the suspect was handcuffed and lying on the ground.
The incident took place on May 14, 2019. A constable made an arrest while responding to a report about a man causing a public disturbance.
According to the RCMP press release, a second constable arrived on scene and became involved in a physical altercation with the 40-year-old man.
Internal and external complaints were made about the level of force used by the second constable.
Battleford RCMP reviewed the incident and on Aug. 16 ordered both a criminal investigation and a code of conduct investigation.
When an RCMP officer is suspected of breaking the law, the investigation must be conducted by an external police force.

The constable has been suspended from duty with pay pending the results of the investigations.
The 40-year-old man did not report any injuries, the press release said.
