Northlands names Elders
Northlands College announced the appointment of two Elders-in-Residence, Margaret Rose McIntyre and Ron Ratte, according to a Nov. 2 news release.
McIntyre, a member of English River First nation (ERFN), brings strong Denesuline values, is a fluent Dene speaker and strong upbringing steeped in the land and her culture. She brings a strong belief in the importance of language preservation.
Ratte, who served formerly as the Manager and Director of Indigenous Initiatives for the College, has extensive experience in “fostering relationships within the fields of justice, policing, and mental health. His dedication to the betterment of Indigenous communities and commitment to building bridges … make him a welcome addition to our college,” quoted from the news release.
Art Exhibits
Yellow Canoe, the art of La Ronge Artist: Hilary Johnstone, is on display at the Saskatchewan Arts Council gallery. (281 Broadway Avenue) in Saskatoon from Nov. 14 to Jan. 6.
Forestry Open House
Sakāw Askiy Management Inc. (Sakāw) held an Open House on Monday Oct. 30 at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) on Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) Far Reserve to give community members an opportunity to see and question their Forest Management Plan (2018 to 2038), which included maps of the Prince Albert Timber Supply Area, in the La Ronge and surrounding areas.
Sakāw, a corporation, holds the Forest Management Agreement for the Prince Albert Timber Supply Area (PA TSA). The Plan is to go to the Saskatchewan government by Dec. 15.
The Northern Advocate will carry more on forestry in the New Year.
Youth Mountain Bike Club coming to JRMCC
Kevin Roberts announced the plan to start a Youth Mountain Bike Club at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC) in the spring.
Bikes and helmets will be available along with a maintenance and repair workshop, he wrote on Facebook Nov. 29.
Youth Wellness Conference hosted by WWC
The Woodland Wellness Centre plan to offer a two-week Youth Healing Conference for youth 18 and under.
There will be healing opportunities, Elder’s teachings, information sessions and guests: Justin Rain, Joey Kyle Genereaux (From Darkness to Light) and THE TALK. The first week will be held in the five Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) communities: Mon. Dec. 11 – Little Red; Tues. Dec. 12 – Hall Lake; Wed. Dec. 13 – Sucker River; Thurs. Dec. 14 – Grandmother’s Bay; and Fri. Dec. 15 – Stanley Mission.

Dec. 6: Day of Remembrance and Action
