Mustangs and Hawks split final home-and-home before Christmas break

The Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks split their home-and-home set before the Christmas Break. Meanwhile, the La Ronge Ice Wolves were swept by the league leading Flin Flon Bombers in their home-and-home before the Christmas break.

At the break the Mustangs are in second place with a record of 22-9-3-0 with 47 points, the Hawks are in third place with a record of 15-15-0-2 with 32 points and the Ice Wolves are in fourth place with a record of 9-20-2-1 with 21 points.

The Bombers still lead the Sherwood Division and SJHL with 58 points and a record of 28-1-2-0 at the break.

The Mustangs closed their pre-Christmas schedule with a 4-1 win over the Hawks in Nipawin on Saturday, Dec. 16.

The Mustangs led 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 after the second period.

Zac Somers, Brayden Westerlund, Nolan Henderson and Aidyn Hutchinson scored for the Mustangs.

Braxton Buckberger scored the lone goal for the Hawks.

James Venne made 38 saves for the Mustangs; Damon Cunningham made 26 saves for the Hawks.

The Hawks won the first game of the home-and-home with a 5-4 overtime win in Melfort on Friday, Dec. 15.

Landon Pappas scored the winner for Nipawin 2:59 into the extra frame.

The game was scoreless after the first period and tied 1-1 after the first period.

Logan Belton, Clay Sleeva, Wyatt Day and Chase Friedt-Mohr scored for the Mustangs in regulation.

Finley Radloff had a pair of goals in regulation time for Nipawin; Eric Hoiness and Artem Hrabovetski added the other Hawks regulation goals.

Kristian Coombs made 29 saves for the Mustangs; Cunningham made 29 saves for the Hawks.

Melfort opened their week with a 4-2 win over the Melville Millionaires in Melville on Tuesday, Dec. 12.

The game was tied 2-2 after the first and second periods.

Aidyn Hutchinson, Chase Friedt-Mohrr, Tristan Ziola and Zac Somers scored for the Mustangs.

Flynn Maxcy and Euan Morrison responded for Melville.

James Venne made 25 saves for the Mustangs; William Dyke made 23 saves for Melville.

The Ice Wolves closed their pre-Christmas schedule with a 4-0 shutout loss to the Bombers in Flin Flon on Saturday, Dec. 16.

Kenneth Marquart made 24 saves for the Bombers to earn the shutout.

Alexi Sylvestre, Justin Lies, Carter Anderson and Anthony Piccininno scored for the Bombers.

Statistics for La Ronge starting goaltender Topher Chirico were not available.

The Bombers won the first game of the home-and-home with a 4-1 win over the Ice Wolves in La Ronge on Friday, Dec. 15.

The Bombers led 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 after the second period.

Dylan Handel scored the lone goal for La Ronge.

Jacob Vockler and Justin Lies each had a pair of goals for Flin Flon.

Topher Chirico made 49 saves for La Ronge; Harmon Laser-Hume made 43 saves for Flin Flon.

The entire SJHL is off until Dec. 30 when the Melville Millionaires take on the Yorkton Terriers. The Nipawin Hawks are back in action on Wednesday, Jan. 3 against the Kindersley Klippers. The La Ronge Ice Wolves and Melfort Mustangs return to action against each other on Friday, Jan. 5 in La Ronge. The Ice Wolves are in Nipawin to play the Hawks on Saturday, Jan. 6.

The Hawks play the Bombers in Flin Flon on Friday, Jan 5. The Bombers then play the Mustangs in Melfort on Saturday, Jan. 6.
