Mustangs and Bombers each take series leads in SJHL semi-final

The Melfort Mustangs and Flin Flon Bombers have each taken 2-0 lead in the SJHL semi-finals on the way to the Canterra Seeds Cup final.

The two Sherwood Division teams and top two seeds each took leads with wins at home to open the series.

The Mustangs took a 2-0 lead in the series with a dramatic 4-3 win over the Broncos in Melfort on Friday, April 5.

Ryan Duguay scored two goals 16 seconds apart in the third period to give the Mustangs the win.

The game was tied 1-1 after the firt period and the Broncos led 3-2 after the second period.

Cahse Friedt-Mohr scored the other two Mustangs’ goals.

Matthew Van Blaricom, Maddox Amaral and Spencer Bell responded for the Broncos.

James Venne made 36 saves for the Mustangs; Benjamin Motew made 37 saves for the Broncos.

Melfort opened the series with a 4-2 win over the Broncos in Melfort on Thursday, April 4.

The game was scoreless after one period and tied 1-1 after the second period.

Duguay had a pair of goals for Melfort with Clay Sleeva and Logan Belton adding the other Mustangs goals.

Bell and Jacob Strizzi responded for the Broncos.

Venne made 33 saves for Melfort; Motew made 24 saves for Humboldt.

The Broncos and Mustangs played Game 4 and Game 5 in Humboldt on Tuesday, April 9 and Wednesday, April 10, results were not available.

The Bombers also took a 2-0 lead with a 6-2 win over the North Stars in Flin Flon on Friday, April 5.

The Bombers led 2-0 after the first period and 3-2 after the second period.

Justin Lies, Anthony Piccinninno, Anthony Bax, Adam McNutt, Tyson Smith and Keefe Gruener scored for the Bombers.

Ben Portner and Kian Bell responded for the North Stars.

Harmon Laser-Hume made 32 saves for the Bombers; Logan Cunningham made 41 saves for the Nrth Stars.

The Bombers opened the series with a 4-3 win over the North Stars in Flin Flon on Thursday, April 4.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and 2-2 after the second period.

Justin Lies scored his second goal as the game winner in the third period;Bax and Matt Egan added the other Bombers goals.

Portner had a pair of goals for the Battlefords with Hunter Burgeson adding the other goal.

Laser-Hume made 20 saves for Flin Flon; Cunningham made 55 saves for the North Stars.

The Bombers and North Stars played Game 4 and Game 5 in North Battleford on Monday, April 8 and Tuesday, April 9, results were not available.
