Police have laid murder charges against a minor suspected in the death of a 19-year-old man in Sandy Bay.

The Sandy Bay RCMP said they responded to a report of an unresponsive man in the community Monday at about 10:30 a.m. It turned out to be 19-year-old Jared Merasty, who was sent for medical attention at the Sandy Bay Health Centre. He later died from his injuries.

The next day, police arrested a young man in connection with Merasty’s death and charged him with second-degree murder. Since he is under 18, the accused cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

He is set to appear in Pelican Narrows Provincial Court via video on Thursday. Police continue to investigate.

Sandy Bay is about 340 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert.
