Dawson Springer’s goal in the third round of the shootout was the difference maker for the Prince Albert Mintos Saturday as they opened up their 2019-20 Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League regular season with a 5-4 victory over the Battlefords Stars.

The two sides traded goals throughout three periods of play and the Mintos almost came away with the win in overtime, but Chase Bertholet’s shot went off of the post.

Josh Peppler led the way for the hosts with a pair of goals, while Bertholet had a goal and an assist each.

Ashton Ferster also scored for the Mintos, who received a 29-save performance from Spencer Welke.

Jake Southgate found the net twice for the visitors, who had beat the Mintos twice in pre-season play.

Vaughn Watterodt had a goal and an assist in the loss, while Carson Dobson dished out two helpers.

Mason Bueckert rounded the scoring for the visitors and Jackson Fellner made 34 saves in his Midget AAA debut.

The Mintos will be back in action Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre, when the Swift Current Legionnaires come to town.
