Rylan Kleiter and his teammates from the Saskatoon Sutherland Curling Club know they’ll be in Prince Albert for the weekend.
They just don’t know yet if they’ll play in a semifinal Saturday or if they will earn a bye straight into Sunday’s final at the 2019 New Holland Canadian Juniors.
The Saskatchewan men’s team clinched a playoff spot Thursday afternoon at the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club with a dominant 12-2 win over Nova Scotia’s Graham Weagle.
Heading into the final round-robin draw Friday morning, Kleiter has an 8-1 record and is currently tied for first place in the Championship Pool with British Columbia’s Tyler Tardi.
The two-time defending national champions and reigning world title holder also clinched a playoff spot Thursday afternoon with a 6-4 win over Quebec’s Vincent Roberge at the Art Hauser Centre.
After handing Tardi his first loss earlier in the day, Manitoba’s J.T. Ryan was upended by Newfoundland & Labrador’s Gregg Blyde in a 9-5 affair.
In the lone Seeding Pool matchup of Draw 17, Prince Edward Island’s Tyler Smith cruised to a 16-2 triumph over Nunavut’s Javen Komaksiutikask.
Meanwhile, Alberta’s Selena Sturmay has all but clinched a spot in the playoffs as she moved to 8-0 with a 6-3 win over Manitoba’s Mackenzie Zacharias.
Elsewhere in the women’s Championship Pool, British Columbia’s Sarah Daniels picked up a 9-7 victory over Saskatchewan’s Sara England and Nova Scotia’s Kaitlyn Jones won an 8-4 contest with New Brunswick’s Justine Comeau.
Skylar Ackerman’s Host Team from Moose Jaw picked up their second win of the week with an 8-4 Seeding Pool triumph over Prince Edward Island’s Lauren Ferguson, while Newfoundland & Labrador’s Mackenzie Glynn prevailed in a 7-4 encounter with Ontario’s Thea Coburn.
