An award-winning blues musician is bringing his honest, intimate sound to the Rock Trout Café Thursday.

Ken Hamm, who won a Juno award in 1991, is hitting the road and touring again after a bout with cancer.

For the last nine year he has been running a music store in Forget, Sask. with his wife, Heather, where he has been teaching music and doing repairs. Now that he’s healthy, Hamm is ready to head back out onto the road. He recently released a new album, and is stopping in town on his way out to Flin Flon, Man.

“I play acoustic blues and still have a lot of original materials and instruments,” Hamm said.

“A kind of mix bag on old vintage instruments. People are quite fascinated with them and the general performance, because I’m able to put on a high energy show with these old instruments.”

Hamm is known for performing original and traditional songs from metal guitar-driven hardedge blues to softer dobro and banjo pieces. He’s influenced by early blues recordings and a love of old-timey music, including the sounds of Ry Cooder, Mississippi John Hurt, John Fahey and John Hartford.

Doors open at the Rock Trout Café Thursday starting at 7 p.m., and the show gets going at 8. Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 at the door.
