An empty store in the Gateway Mall was bursting with the sound of children’s laughter on Saturday, as about a hundred people celebrated Family Literacy Day in Prince Albert.
The event was organized by the Prince Albert Literacy Network, which drew in shoppers with fun activities, live music and story readings. They took over the store right next to their permanent space in the mall, and filled it up with books and balloon animals.
Officially, Family Literacy Day takes place across the nation on Jan. 27th, but the network took advantage of a busy weekend at the mall.
Family literacy coordinator Sandra Kaun said volunteers tried to design activities that combine physical activity with learning.
“We have our bowling,” she said. “We encourage kids to aim for specific colours of bowling pins. After they’ve knocked pins down they can count and add up the score, which promotes math literacy.”
