Guhle and Schneider find the back of the net at Top Prospects Game

Prince Albert Raiders blueliner Kaiden Guhle and Prince Albert product Braden Schneider, who is a defenceman for the Brandon Wheat Kings, both scored on Thursday to help Team White to a 5-3 win over Team Red at the CHL Top Prospects Game in Hamilton, Ont.

Tyson Forester (Barrie Colts) had two goals and an assist for Team White, while Connor Zary (Kamloops Blazers) dished out three assists.

Cole Perfetti (Saginaw Spirit) scored an empty-net goal late in the third period.

Jeremie Poirier (Saint John Sea Dogs) had a goal and an assist each for Team Red, who also got goals from Dawson Mercer (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) and Jack Quinn (Ottawa 67’s).

Raiders forward Ozzy Wiesblatt, who was an assistant captain for Team Red, was held without a point.

Samuel Hlavaj (Sherbrooke Phoenix) and Dylan Garand (Kamloops Blazers) combined for a 21-save showing for Team White, while Brock Gould (Moose Jaw Warriors) stopped 27 shots for Team Red.

Gould ended up playing the entire game as Nico Daws (Guelph Storm) was unable to play due to an upper body injury.

Guhle and Wiesblatt are both expected to be back in the Raiders lineup on Friday night when they visit the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Raiders to wear Hockey Night in Canada themed uniforms next Saturday

The Prince Albert Raiders will be donning special themed jerseys for their home game against the Medicine Hat Tigers next Saturday night.

The uniforms, which feature the vintage Hockey Night in Canada logo that was in use until 1998, also include the Kidney Foundation logo on the front of the collar and the left sleeve.

They also include “The Logan Boulet Effect” on the inside of the collar, in honor of the former Humboldt Broncos player who sparked a national movement for organ donation following his passing in April 2018.

Proceeds from an online auction for the jerseys will go towards local chapters of the Kidney Foundation.

The auction will begin on Monday at noon on 32auctions.com.

Bidding will begin at $250 with a minimum bid increment of $15. Jerseys will also be available for a buy now price of $400.

The online portion of the auction will close at 11 p.m. next Friday.

Any jerseys not bought outright will carry on to a live, silent auction next Saturday.

The auction will then conclude at the five-minute mark of the third period.

Jerseys will be available for pickup on Tuesday, Jan. 28. A $15 charge for shipping will apply for jerseys that aren’t able to be picked up.

Through the first two years of the Suits Up event, the Western Hockey League and its teams have raised more than $460,000 for the Kidney Foundation.

Around the WHL

Everett Silvertips forward Dawson Butt has been given a 12-game suspension by the WHL after his involvement in a third period line brawl against the Regina Pats on Sunday.

During the scuffle, Butt threw punches at Pats blueliner Makai Mitchell, who is out six-to-eight weeks with broken bones in his face.

In a release sent out by the league, the fact that Butt had been suspended twice already in his career and that Mitchell was injured on the play were key factors in making their decision.

It’s the longest suspension handed out by the WHL since Victoria Royals forward Brandon Magee was given 12 games for a match penalty in the 2014 playoffs against the Portland Winterhawks.

Butt is eligible to return to the Silvertips lineup on Wednesday, Feb. 19 when they’ll host the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Friday’s contest at Rogers Arena is the second of three meetings in a two-week span between the Raiders and the Oil Kings.

The Oil Kings picked up a 3-2 win in a shootout last Saturday night in Prince Albert and will return to the Art Hauser Centre next Friday.

Heading into this weekend’s slate of games, the 29-7-5-3 Oil Kings have an eight-point lead over the Medicine Hat Tigers for first place in the Central Division and are just a single marker ahead of the Portland Winterhawks in the league table.

Prince Albert product Riley Sawchuk leads the Oil Kings in scoring with 51 points and is tied with Adam Beckman of the Spokane Chiefs for the fourth-most assists in the league with 35.

Forward Dylan Guenther, who was the first overall pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft, is third in rookie scoring with 34 points and is tied with Pavel Novak of the Kelowna Rockets and Logan Stankoven of the Kamloops Blazers for the second most goals by a first-year player with 16.

Rookie netminder Sebastian Cossa is also having an excellent campaign as he has the fourth best goals against average in the league (2.14), the fifth best save percentage (.923) and is tied for fourth in wins (17) and shutouts (three).
