Four band councillors from Montreal Lake Cree Nation have been suspended without pay on corruption allegations.

According to a statement posted on the band’s Facebook page, councillors Dirk McDonald, Roger Bird, Frank James Roberts and Sidney Nelson were suspended on Monday.

The statement levels a long list of accusations against the councillors, including deliberate misrepresentation of facts, corrupt practices, disregarding band legislation, breaching their oath of office and harassing staff members. They are also accused of “compromising the band’s good standing with funders and suppliers” and “attempted destabilization of the band government.”

The councillors will face a disciplinary hearing at a date and place “determined by band law,” the statement said.

The Montreal Lake Cree Nation’s reserve is about 100 km north of Prince Albert, close to the town of Waskesiu.
