Art students show off this year’s pieces at annual year end art show

For the past eight months 147 of Christina Thoen’s art students have been putting their brushes together to create a five-foot-wide reproduction of Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night.

That work has finally been completed and it, along with many others, will be on display at the John. M. Cuelenaere Public Library’s Grace Campbell Gallery as part of the Christina’s Art School Year End Art Show. The exhibit will run until June 28, with an opening reception to be held on Thursday, June 1 at 7 p.m.

Thoen said it’s important that her students gain the confidence to be able to show their work in public.

“Seeing your work in your sketchbook is just not the same,” Thoen said.

“Having it framed and up on the wall (provides) a sense of real professionalism, like they’re legit.”

The Starry Night painting will be raffled off with proceeds going towards helping fund art classes for students who might otherwise be unable to afford the expense and not qualify for other forms of assistance. She added that money raised may also help cover framing fees so more students can take part in the Year End Show.

Thoen’s students have completed collaborative pieces in the past, including mosaic-like renditions of van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night, which hangs at the Cuelenaere Library, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Claude Monet Painting in His Garden at Argenteuil, which can be found at City Hall.
