Plaza 88 marks two-year anniversary with performance by young Saskatchewan quartet

Eva Folks never imagined that her four young children would become a touring musical act after playing in public for only four years.

“I did not expect it to happen so quickly at that age but it’s definitely been as busy as we want to be,” said Folks, manger of her children’s group, the Sundrops.

“We had to start turning down places because it was just too many places and they still had to keep up with learning new songs, trying to get better, because at their age they’re always improving.”

The Sundrops — singers and multi-instrumentalists Jesse, 10; Lara 11; Darian, 14 and Hailey, 15 — are performing in Prince Albert for the first time on Saturday at Plaza 88’s two-year anniversary celebration. Plaza 88 marketing director Linda Jensen said she booked the Swift Current-based four-piece after watching them perform at Telemiracle.

The Sundrops’ careers took off in 2013 after being noticed by a member of a local bluegrass group during a performance at Swift Current’s Lyric Theatre. The Sundrops were invited to perform at the group’s CD release concert.

“It turned out so well that we had just offer after offer after that to perform. It was like, ‘O.K., I guess we’re going to do this thing,’” Folks said.
