Youth placed in Terrorism Peace Bond released from custody under strict conditions, investigation continues

A youth in the RCMP’s Federal Northwest Regional National Security Enforcement Section (NSES) in Saskatchewan has been released from custody after being placed in a Terrorism Peace Bond.

The youth is subject to strict release conditions and cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. The RCMP declined to comment further on the matter because it is still under investigation.

“Incidents like this are very complex and sensitive in nature – so we always ensure our Federal Policing units are available to seamlessly work and integrate with detachments across the province,” said Supt. Andrew Farquhar, the Deputy Criminal Operations Officer of the Federal Policing Northwest Region in Saskatchewan.

Individuals are placed in Terrorism Peace Bonds when there are reasonable grounds to fear a terrorist offence.

Meadow Lake RCMP connected with the Federal NSES in March after arresting a youth following a report of uttering threats and inciting hatred. The youth entered the peace bond on June 24.

“The RCMP’s National Security program is very concerned about youth involvement in online radicalization in the broader area of grievance-based violence,” reads the Saskatchewan RCMP press. “Families, communities, and law enforcement are all key stakeholders in the identification, prevention, and disengagement from violent extremism. “RCMP’s Federal Policing Northwest Region in Saskatchewan is committed to working with all local detachments and police agencies to keep communities safe and secure—while protecting Canadian interests at home and abroad.”
