U17 Toppers girls volleyball team takes gold in Weyburn tournament

The Prince Albert Optimist Toppers En Fuego girls volleyball team was perfect this past weekend, cruising undefeated through the round robin and playoff rounds to capture gold at the Tier 1 U17 Women Sask. Cup No. 2 in Weyburn.

“Our team performed the best that they could have performed,” Toppers head coach Nancy Wagar said.

“We pretty much walked over the competition except for our first match — we had a little bit of a bump in the road — but we did win all our matches. All day Sunday we took out the No. 3 seed, then the No. 1 seed, then the No. 2 seed in the final so we are now the No. 1 seed. It was a good day and we beat them quite convincingly.”

The Toppers’ dominant play continued into the championship match, where they defeated the Saskatoon HVC Howlers in straight sets, 25-15, 25‐18 to win the gold.

“I think it was more of a relief than anything,” Wagar said of the win.

“There wasn’t a ton of excitement just because it was quite a blowout but I know (the players) were excited and I think they were just relieved that they finished and they finished really strong and they knew they could. It’s just a matter of you know you can do it, but can you actually do it?”
