Sherwood Division teams to face off this weekend

The Sherwood Division teams in the SJHL are facing off this weekend. The Nipawin Hawks and Melfort Mustangs meet in Melfort on Friday, March 8, the La Ronge Ice Wolves are then in Melfort on Sunday March 10.

The Ice Wolves travel to Flin Flon to face the Flin FlonBombers on Friday, March 8 and the Bombers are in Nipawin to play the Hawks on Sunday, March 10.

The Bombers are still in first place in the SJHL and Sherwood Division with 87 points.

As of March 4 the Mustangs are in second place in the Sherwood with a record of 35-14-3-0 with 73 points, the Hawks are in third place with a record of 19-27-1-4 with 43 points and the Ice Wolves are in fourth place with a record of 15-32-3-2 with 35 points.

The Mustangs concluded their two-game set in North Battleford with a 5-4 overtime win on Saturday, March 2, getting their winning streak to five straight.

Clay Sleeva scored the winner just under a minute and 50 seconds into the extra frame.

The Mustangs led 2-1 after the first period and the game was tied 3-3 after the second period.

Sleeva, Logan Belton, Aidyn Hutchinson and Rhett Hamilton scored in regulation time for the Mustangs.

Jordan Grill had a pair of goals for the North Stars in regulation; Tanner Gold and Elijah Anderson added the other Battlefords’ goals.

James Venne made 30 saves for the Mustangs; Logan Cunningham made 13 saves in just over 35 minutes for the North Stars before he was replaced by Matthew MacArthur who made five saves.

Melfort ran their winning streak to four straight with a 4-3 win over the Battlefords North Stars in North Battleford on Friday, March 1.

The game was scoreless after the first period and the North Stars led 2-1 after the second period.
Clay Sleeva, Austin Shepherd, Tao Flory and Ryan Duguay scored for the Mustangs.

Kian Bell, Tanner Gold and Jordan Grill responded for the North Stars.
Venne made 32 saves for Melfort; Matthew MacArthur made 23 saves for the North Stars.

The Mustangs opened their week with a 7-4 win over the Estevan Bruins on Wednesday, Feb. 28 in Melfort.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and 3-3 after the second period.

Aidyn Hutchinson had four goals for the Mustangs, Nolan Patterson, Sleeva and Shepherd added the other Mustangs’ goals. Shepherd’s goal was his first in the SJHL.

Cade Kennedy had a pair of goals for Estevan; Raine Hodge and Ilia Chmelevski added the other Estevan goals.

Venne made 24 saves for the Mustangs; Jackson Miller made no saves in 33 seconds for the Bruins before he was replaced by Wyatt Bouvier who made 16 saves.

Melfort was in Flin Flon to play the Bombers on Wednesday, March 6, results were not available.
The Hawks lost 4-1 to the Yorkton Terriers in Nipawin on Friday, March 1.

The Terriers led 2-1 after the first period and 4-1 after the second period.

Alex Bernauer scored the lone Hawks’ goal.

Aiden Knutson, Anthony McIntosh, Anthony Domina and Cooper Algajer responded for the Terriers.

Damon Cunningham made 28 saves for Nipawin; Ethan Farrow made 34 saves for Yorkton.

The Hawks opened their week with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Weyburn Red Wings in Nipawin on Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Max Monette scored the winner for Weyburn 1:59 into the extra frame.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first period and 3-3 after the second period.

Eric Hoiness had a pair of goals for the Hawks; Finley Radloff and Maguire Ratzlaff added the other Nipawin regulation time goals.
Colin Doherty, Liam Fitzgerald, Jacob Visentini and Jaxson Ruthven responded for the Red Wings in regulation time.

Tyson Endall made 33 saves for Nipawin; Dazza Mitchell made 32 saves for Weyburn.

The Hawks were in Yorkton to play the Terriers on Tuesday, March 5, results were not available.

The Ice Wolves closed their two-game home-stand against the Weyburn Red Wings with a 3-2 loss in La Ronge on Saturday, March 2.

The game was scoreless after the first period and Weyburn led 3-1 after the second period.

Parker Layton and Mason Bueckert scored for the Ice Wolves.

Braigh LeGrandeur had a pair of goals for the Red Wings while Blake Betson added the other goal.

The Red Wings led 2-0 after the first period and 3-1 after the second period.

Zane Normand scored the lone Ice Wolves’ goal.
