Rivers Dragons top seed for this weekend’s provincials

The Saskatchewan Rivers Dragons will be the team to beat this weekend at the provincial championships.

Fresh off a 10-2 record in tournament play this year, the Rivers Dragons will be the top overall seed from the North Saskatchewan Junior Rugby League in Saskatoon on Saturday.

In their final sevens event of the campaign last Saturday, the Rivers Dragons posted a 2-1 record with 24-5 and 17-10 wins over the Saskatoon Badgers and Warman Springboks, while they dropped a 19-17 decision to a team that featured players from Lashburn and Regina.

Their most impressive showing of the day came against the Springboks, as they came back from a 10-0 halftime deficit by scoring 17 unanswered points.

The Rivers Dragons then turned in a strong showing on Wednesday in Saskatoon with a 29-0 shutout of the Badgers.

Jonty Kruger led the way with two tries, while Thayne Clarke, Parker Elphinstone and Jacob Beauchesne also scored.

Kruger and Beauchesne also made converts.

Meanwhile, the Prince Albert Panthers female rugby team will get their first taste of provincial action this weekend in Saskatoon.

They are coming off of a third place result at the Rugby Day in Warman event last weekend, as they defeated the Saskatoon Razorbacks to end the tournament on a winning note.
