Raiders drop early lead, fall to Brandon in regulation for first time this season

The Brandon Wheat Kings overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat that Prince Albert Raiders 5-3 at Westman Place in Brandon, Man. on Saturday night. The match wraps up the six-game season series between the two teams, with P.A. finishing with a 4-1-1-0 record.

Parker Kelly gave P.A. an early 1-0 lead in the opening minutes of the game and Cole Fonstad added a power play marker at the mid-way point of the frame. Brandon’s Stelio Mattheos responded not long after with a power play goal for the home side. After 20 minutes the Raiders led 2-0.

Wheat King Reid Duke tied the game with the man up mid-way through the second period and 34 seconds later Connor Gutenberg beat P.A. netminder Ian Scott to give Brandon their first lead of the match.

Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said the Wheat Kings’ consecutive power play goals gave them the momentum to turn the game around. Later in the period Nolan Patrick put away Brandon’s third goal of the period to put the home team up 4-2 heading into intermission.

Early in the final frame Wheat King James Shearer scored his team’s fifth unanswered goal to extend the lead to 5-2 but ten minutes later Kolten Olynek finally beat Brandon goalie Logan Thompson to cut the lead to 5-3. The Wheat Kings outshot P.A. 42-29 in the match and scored on two of their eight power play opportunities.

The Raiders are back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Moose Jaw to take on the Warriors. Game time is 7 p.m.
