Three of Prince Albert’s top CrossFit athletes are out to show that they can compete with some of the best in the world.

Three athletes from Pure Athletics – CrossFit Prince Albert have qualified for the next round in the Crossfit Games by finishing near the top of their respective divisions.

CrossFit is a fitness regimen originally developed by Greg Glassman. It combines elements of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more to maximize the amount of work done in the shortest time.

Unlike other sports where athletes travel to tournaments in order to qualify for higher rounds of competition, CrossFit athletes compete in the Open round inside their own gyms.

For five weeks, the athletes are given a workout.

The workout comes out on Thursday evening, and the athletes have until Monday to complete it.

“They are judged by a registered judge to count their reps, make sure movements are meeting standards and so on,” said Whitney Darchuk co-owner of Pure Athletics and one of the athletes who has qualified for the next round of competition.

Athletes looking to move on to regionals also have to record all of their performances to be sent in to CrossFit Games headquarters.

“Once the five weeks are over, you see where your placing is. In the main category, you need to place in the top 20 in your respective region.”

Prince Albert is located in the Canada West region. Darchuk finished eighth in the Canada West Region, while Josh Kapacila, another coach at Pure Athletics, finished sixth.

A third athlete from Pure Athletics has also qualified for the next round.

Hollis Finlayson, 14, has advanced to the next stage of he 14-15 age category.

She advanced by finishing 140th out of the top 200 worldwide, going against about 1,400 teens from across the globe.
