Provincial senior golf championships to be held at Cooke Municipal next July

Daily Herald File Photo Colin Coben of Delisle, seen here during the 2019 senior men’s Lobstick tournament at Waskesiu, is always a contender at the Golf Saskatchewan senior men’s golf championship.

For the first time in three years, the Cooke Municipal Golf Course will be the host to a provincial championship as the 101st senior men’s championship and the 57th senior women’s championship will be held at the course from July 28-30, 2020.

“It’s always exciting anytime that we can get a provincial or national event here,” said the course’s head golf pro Darcy Myers, who is also a member of the tournament host committee.

“The feedback that we get from having a Golf Saskatchewan event is always positive and having the chance to host a major championship like this helps to put us on the map.”

Next year’s senior championships are the first Golf Saskatchewan competition to be held at Cooke since the mixed team championship was held there in August 2017.

“We went started to go through our irrigation replacements in 2018 so we didn’t host any provincial competitions while we worked through that,” Myers said.

“There’s a bid process that each course goes through and we like to map things out a year or two in advance when it comes to trying to finding an event that we’d like to host.”

The senior championships were last held at Cooke in 1991, when Ray Marsh and Gerry Street of Saskatoon won the men’s and women’s titles respectively.

Local golf fans will recognize many of the competitors that are expected to compete for the provincial as they take place at the annual Northern tournaments at Cooke or the Lobstick events at Waskesiu.

“The Golf Saskatchewan tournaments that we have hosted in the past have always been well attended no matter what the category it is,” Myers said. “Our course is a fairly popular one around the province and people love playing here.”

Ken Rodgers and Kim Walker of Regina were the winners of last year’s senior championships, which were held at Royal Regina Golf Club.
