The sole occupant of a plane that crashed in rural Saskatchewan is dead, according to the RCMP.
Responding to an email inquiry from the Leader-Post, an RCMP spokesperson wrote that Friday morning at around 6:30 a.m., they had received a report that the plane had crashed in the Rural Municipality of Coteau, in southern Saskatchewan.
“Officers immediately responded. The sole occupant of the plane was declared deceased by EMS at the scene,” the emailed response states.
The name age or gender of the victim was not given.
It went on to say no further information will be shared by police at this time, as the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) will be investigating the incident.
The TSB sent a notice to media earlier in the day, indicating a “team of investigators” was being deployed in relation to the incident.
“The TSB will be gathering information and assessing the occurrence,” the media release stated, characterizing the incident as having occurred near Birsay, a hamlet located within the Coteau municipality.
Tourism Saskatchewan describes Birsay as a small hamlet. By road, it is located roughly 237 kilometres northwest of Regina. Despite further questions from the Leader-Post, the TSB would not provide any additional information, with a spokesperson stating only that the federal entity is awaiting “more confirmations on this occurrence.”
