The City of Prince Albert will be hosting a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Day on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Municipal Service Centre (11, 38th St East, Prince Albert). The Sanitation Division hosts this day annually to ensure residents have an opportunity to dispose of their Household Hazardous Waste safely.
“It’s an opportunity for residents in Prince Albert to bring in all of their old unwanted household waste. These are things they don’t normally accept at the Landfill. Things like adhesives, cleaners, all fuels, medications, solvents, things that are considered hazardous waste,” said Todd Olexson, the Prince Albert Sanitation Manager. “It’s also an opportunity to dispose of all these materials appropriately, it keeps them out of our Landfill and out of the environment.
Household hazardous waste includes many items that people are storing in their basements, garages, kitchens, or bathrooms and are no longer needed. Hazardous items are often toxic or flammable, so extra care should be taken when disposing of them.
“Many of these items shouldn’t be dumped down the sink, they very corrosive, cleaner poisons and things like that. They should be brought to a place where they can be taken. Residents can get rid of them while having them appropriately disposed off without having them harming our environment,” Olexson said.
The public is encouraged to take advantage of the hazardous waste collection day by coming out and safely disposing of these unwanted or unusable items.
Household Items to be accepted (but not limited to): Anti-freeze, adhesives, aerosols, automotive and household batteries, cleaners, corrosives, fuels, mercury, oxidizers, poisons, paint cans and spray paint, pharmaceuticals, solvents.
Residents are also advised to keep the labels on the materials they are bringing in. This helps to identify the substances and avoids the need for testing substances, so they are properly identified and disposed of.
He added that “I encourage the residents to look in their garages, into their cupboards and take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of these items appropriately. We look forward to seeing them on Saturday.”
Items not accepted: Electronics waste – SWEEP (Sask. Waste Electronic Equipment Program) – SARCAN, used oil, oil filters & containers, tires, and propane tanks – take to Prince Albert Landfill.
Other hazardous waste products excluded: Biological, Infectious, Radioactive, Explosive, Ammunition, Industrial Waste.
