New season underway at Thomas Settee Boxing Club

For local boxers and those who just want to stay in shape, this past week was an exciting one as the Thomas Settee Boxing Club opener their doors for a new season Monday.

Although training officially began Monday, there is still room for prospective junior and seniors level fighters who want to sign up at the gym, which is located behind the Venice House restaurant on 15th Avenue and Central Avenue.

“We recommend that those who come out have indoor running shoes, along with their own hand wraps and skipping ropes,” coach Bob Tichkowsky said. “We also recommend getting their own bag gloves as well, but we have those for everyone when they start.

“I think the biggest thing we’d tell those that are coming here for the first time is just the great experience they are going to get. There are different boxing techniques that you learn and the exercises that we do are pretty different from most places.”

Two members of the club will be in action for heavyweight fights on Nov. 17 and 18 in Saskatoon, as Devon Anderson (senior) and Dawson Williams (junior) will take part in the Saskatchewan Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Tournament at TCU Place.

“That should be a really good card to be a part of,” Tichkowsky said. “We got some fighters coming in from the United States for that one so it should be an exciting event.”

Fighters from the club are also expected to take part in the provincial championship in Swift Current in December.

Training sessions will be held until June and will take place every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The costs to join for the whole year are $55 for juniors and $65 for seniors.
