The Prince Albert Council of Women is launching a new, monthly event celebrating the achievements of women in the community.

Called the Showcase of Women, the inaugural meeting is tonight and will highlight the contributions of the women who volunteer with Prince Albert North Search and Rescue. Jenn Fendelet Sanderson is lined up to speak next month, while November will be about Persons Day and December set aside for a vigil for the victims of the 1989 Montreal Massacre.

The idea to host these monthly celebrations of local women came from a newer council member.

“It was a chance remark one of our newer members made,” explained Council of Women secretary Rose Rothenburger.

“She was at the (women’s hall of fame) induction ceremony, the first one she had been to, and she said, ‘Why don’t we have something like this every month?’

While the Council of Women couldn’t have an awards banquet every month, the idea of celebrating local successes intrigued them.

“We started playing around with that idea and thought we could do a showcase every month,” Rothenburger said.

“We thought getting the women from P.A. Search and Rescue would be a good one to start with because it’s something a little bit different, it’s something that not a lot of people know about and it’s something that people don’t think of women necessarily being a part of.”

Rothenburger talked about why it’s important to celebrate the accomplishment of local women.

“It’s always important to showcase what women are doing in the community,” she said.

“Something like this will bring awareness to all the different things women do in our community.”

The event has no cost unless you decide to order food. The first showcase will be held in the back room of Smitty’s Restaurant at 6 p.m. Subsequent supper meetings will be held once a month, tentatively the third Wednesday of every month.
