It was a great week for Prince Albert’s Danny Klughart at the Waskesiu Golf Course.
After he captured his first men’s Lobstick open title Tuesday, he followed that up with his third match play crown Saturday as he defeated Colin Coben in the championship flight final.
“I had been close to winning the Open as I’ve had three second place finishes, so that was my goal coming up here this week along with the match play,” said Klughart, who previously won the match play title in 2013 and 2017.
“I putted really well all week and I was hitting the ball in good spots off of the tee.”
After winning the open by two strokes over Pat Marcia and Jerry Christiansen, Klughart cruised through the field in the match play tournament as he defeated Garry Hagen, Doug Kozak, Trevor Bloom and Jason Galon to reach the final.
Klughart kept up his strong form against Coben as he went four up after the first four holes and kept a steady lead until the end of the match as he drained a lengthy birdie putt on the 15th green to become the first golfer to win the Lobstick open and match play events in the same year Cadmus Delorme in 2012.
“I made a pretty bad wedge shot just before that and I was pretty lucky to have made that putt,” Klughart said. “Colin had got within six or seven feet there and had a pretty good chance at a birdie, so I knew that I had to get it close, but as I looked up I thought that it had a pretty good chance of going in.
“It was great to play in the final with Colin as that’s a guy that I’ve idolized growing up. He gets around the course really well and you know that you have to bring your ‘A’ game against him.”
Coben, who won the senior men’s Lobstick last week, reached the final after wins over Tyler Zaba, Brad Moser, Landon Klassen and Michael Smith.
“I would have liked to have had a better start as it’s tough to come back from four down against a guy like Danny, especially with how well he was playing,” Coben said.
“With that said, I was happy to be in the final. I played well all week and I was able to keep up my level of play from last week here.”
Cory Selander of Prince Albert won the championship consolation flight over Chris Reid of Meadow Lake.
