Cows and Plows

The Settlement Planning Committee and Council have reached the final stages of “finalizing the Settlement Financial Plan and the Settlement Agreement” in the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) Treaty 6 Agricultural Benefits (Cows and Plows) Claim, according to a LLRIB news release dated June 28, 2024.

Once this is approved a Ratification Vote to approve or reject the settlement will be held, the time and related information will be provided once the dates are confirmed. Voting will be both online and “at selected in-person polling stations,” quoted from the news release.

New LLRIB members or any member who has moved residence are asked contact the LLRIB Membership office at 306-425-2183 to update contact information.

Elks Fair

The Elks Fair in La Ronge is slated for July 19, 20, 21. There will be a couple of new rides, including the Ferris Wheel, which will be bigger, with much enhanced lighting and faster loading and unloading, with the option to unload from two sides, Vaughn Skogstad, said in an interview with the Northern Advocate.

There is an increased intertest in food venders this year also, he said.

There will be entertainment daily.

Gates open at noon every day and close around 1 a.m.

Tony Cote Summer Games preparation underway

Refurbishment of the running track at Senator Myles Venne School (SMVS), a new volleyball court, and many more tasks are underway in preparation for the Tony Cote Summer Games to be held in Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) territory, the Northern Village of Air Ronge and Town of La Ronge. Elks Fairgrounds will serve as the Athlete’s Village and the Mel Hegland will be used as food services area and more…

The Games take place between Aug. 10 and 16.

8th annual Suicide Prevention Wellness Walk

The Walk is slated to take place between Aug. 2 and 9 with people walking from Prince Albert to Stanley Mission. A Candlelight Vigil is planned for when the walkers arrive in La Ronge at the kiskinwuhumatowin Urban Reserve. For information call Laurie-Anne Roberts at 306-420-7232.

Pē-kiwēk Home Coming: Cumberland House Celebrating 250 years

Celebrations for the community of Cumberland House will be held between Aug. 11 and 17 with storytelling, cultural competitions, daily races, talent shows and entertainment. For information contact Ryan Carriere at 306-609-0110.

Pixels at Twenty Paces art exhibit for July

Kevin Jackson, painter, printer and tinker, has an exhibit, Checking Box, a display of 3-D Painting at Marker 47 Gallery in La Ronge. Jackson will be on hand Sat. July 13 throughout the afternoon to demonstrate some of his creations.

Second Annual Women Protecting the Land Camp

The Camp will be held August 16 to 18. Registration for the event can be found on the For Peat Sake: Protecting Northern Saskatchewan Muskegs Facebook page.

Women can register for the Sunday only or for the whole event.

Youth Paddling Camps

Canoe Kayak Saskatchewan will host Youth Paddling Camps in July and August for Boys and Girls 9-13 and 14-17. The event includes free family paddling days Aug. 6 to 9. Contact Morgan Bell for information at 306-420-8395.

NDP Athabasca

Leroy Laliberte, who works as the Community Wellness Manager for Flying Dust First Nation. He is also the founder and director of Burn Youth/BURN Consulting, will be the NDP candidate in the upcoming provincial election, according to an NDP news release dated June 18.

Current MLA for the Athabasca, Jim Lemaigre will be the Sask Party candidate in the election.

National Indigenous Day celebrated

National Indigenous Day and Pride were celebrated in La Loche June 21. The day included a walk and other festivities.

National Indigenous Day was celebrated in La Ronge and surrounding communities.

In La Ronge, the Lac La Ronge Indian Band (LLRIB) celebrated with a culture event, with demonstrations of various Indigenous crafts and skills, music and traditional food.

Surrounding communities such as, Stanley Mission and Hall Lake, held their own celebrations.

Canada Day

Canada Day was celebrated in La Ronge with a Pancake Breakfast at the Kikinahk Friendship Centre, a Parade through the Town and a Family Day with entertainment throughout the afternoon.

La Loche Elementary School construction reaches 65 percent completion

In a partnership between Northern Lights School Division (NLSD), community advocates and the Government of Saskatchewan, construction on the new La Loche Elementary School is 65 per cent complete, according to a Government of Saskatchewan news release dated June 17.

When complete, the new school will occupy 5,548 square meters and be located next to the Dene High School. It is anticipated the school will accommodate approximately 475 students from Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 6.

The school is predicted to be completed in the spring of 2025.
