The Government of Canada, the Province of Saskatchewan and the Prince Albert Housing Authority officially opened 62 new renovated affordable housing spaces to support low income families on Thursday.
The opening took place on Second Street West in Prince Albert. The federal and provincial governments contributed $16 million for the project at the Village Green.
“The Government of Saskatchewan recognizes how important social housing is to our communities. The renovations we have completed here in Village Green will provide desirable, safe and affordable housing for families in our community,” Prince Albert Northcote MLA Alana Ross said.
The units were originally built in 1977. The renovations include improvements to energy efficiency, interior and exterior finishes, and landscaping. The Project was commenced in 2021 and funding for the project was provided by a federal and provincial collaboration under the Canadian Community Housing Initiative(CCHI).
“We are very happy and excited as a board to see that we have these wonderful units in place that will help house so many Prince Albert residents,” said Don Woods, vice chair of the Prince Albert Housing Authority Board.
‘We look forward to continuing our work with community partners at all levels of Government to connect with people in need for affordable housing, supporting them and raising their families, planning for the future and building a life right here in Prince Albert. Congratulations and a warm welcome to all the families who will now call Village Green home” Ross added.
While taking a tour of some of the Units and speaking on the process of renovation, Housing Authority GM David DeVos said it’s exciting to have the new units open.
“Seeing people come into the units for the first time when they get it is so emotional,” DeVos said. “They have never had something so brand new because its brand new for them and they are the first people living in them as well as the Authority.”
The renovation was done in three phases, phases one and two had been completed, allocated and occupied. Phase three, which has just been finished, has 23 housing units completed with moving in date Aug 1.
