Repairs to the St. Catherine School can begin shortly after fluctuating weather conditions led to a problem with the roof. During the Prince Albert Catholic School Division board of education’s regular meeting on Monday, trustees learned that the division had been approved for additional funding for roof repairs.

The school is experiencing roof leaks over the gym storage and classroom storage areas.

At the February meeting, the board approved an application for funding under the Ministry of Education’s emergent funding program.

“(I am ) pleased to report that we were successful in our application and have been approved for funding for a maximum of $30,000 to fund the St. Catherine roof leak repair project. So accordingly we are now taking steps to implement this roof repair,” Chief Financial Officer Greg McEwen told the trustees.
The shifting weather conditions earlier in the winter caused water damage in the school.

“That’s excellent to get that extra funding,” board chair Suzanne Stubbs said.

During the February meeting McEwen explained that a contractor looked at it and approximately 1,000 square feet of roof has to be replaced from the vapour barrier to the SBS roof membrane.

Board receives fundraiser update

McEwen also updated the trustees about their support for the Toonies for Tuition fundraiser which they approved during their meeting on March 1 when they unanimously chose to support the program through personal donations.

The campaign supports students in provinces where there is no public funding for Catholic schools.

The initiative was spearheaded in Canada by vice chair Albert Provost and began in 2011.

During the allotted time, the trustees donated a total of $780 in support of the fundraiser.

Last year in Prince Albert the total funds raised were $2,250 with Ecole St. Anne raising the highest dollar amount with $1,200.

Last year’s provincial winner was Saskatchewan and the winner of the school board/division trophy was Kenora Catholic Division in Ontario. Prince Albert Catholic previously won the trophy from 2011 to 2017. The province of Saskatchewan also won the provincial trophy from 2011 to 2017.
