Free bus makes final run

The free bus, that ran between La Ronge and Prince Albert for more than two years, made the final run on Friday, June 28.

The Kikinahk Friendship Centre operated the service for close to two years, with a break for a few months in 2023.

John Halcrow has been the driver for the bus for more than two years and has seen a number of riders come and go.

“A lot of students, a lot of people going to visit family members, a lot of young ladies going shopping on their off days with their kids. Holidays and summertime, a lot of travel,” he said of the people riding the bus.

Having it close down in June is a challenge, he said, because it’s a busy time for the bus service.

“I hope somebody figures something out,” he said.

It’s a boon for many people in the three communities, he added.

“It helps the communities around and, especially elders and people without licences or vehicle.”

The bus service has been helpful to people in getting jobs and having transportation, Halcrow said.

“It’s a much-needed service and I’m sad to see it end here,” he said.

In his years as driver for the bus, it’s been used very steady and consistently winter and summer, all year.

As he prepared to complete his paperwork from the day’s ride, Halcrow said he was going to get another job, “until this comes back.”
