‘It’s important to celebrate’: Prince Albert Legion prepares for second annual legion week

Daily Herald File Photo Mayor Greg Dionne spoke as Don Graves and Legion President Rick Hodgson unveiled a new monument in front of the Legion to kick off Legion Week in Prince Albert in 2023.

The Prince Albert Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 2 is putting the finishing touches on a seven-day ceremony to mark the 2024 Legion Week celebration.
This event will held between Sept. 15 -21 at the Legion House. Prince Albert legion first vice-president and membership chair Deanne Riese said they are looking forward putting local veterans front and centre.
“It is important to celebrate and remember the veterans and help the ones who are struggling with one challenge or the other, ” Riese explained. “We also make available service officers who will work with people to figure out how we can help them.”
The event will start on Sunday, Sept. 15 with the raising of the flag ceremony and will continue throughout the week. Activities have been lined up for every day including a documentary that will be presented on the 100th Anniversary of the Canadian Legion, 80th Anniversary of the D-Day and the battle of Normandy. There will also be a volunteer appreciation night, a fitness night courtesy of the Saskatchewan Seniors Fitness Lakeland District on Thursday, and a jam session on Wednesday were residents can bring an instrument and play along, or just sit back and enjoy the music.
Some Canadian Legion branches have celebrated Legion Week since the 1980s, but this will be the second year Saskatchewan Legions will take part. The event spread across Canada for 2023 and was hosted in Prince Albert for the first time. This year will mark the second.
The Mayor of the City of Prince Albert has proclaimed Sept.15-21 as the Legion’s week so the celebrations will take place in Prince Albert this year just like it did last year.
“We are hoping that people will come out and sign up for the Legion,” Riese said. “Get to know the people and help out where they can or use it to educate everyone on the good that the Legion does.”
