Firefighters worked for hours to put out a blaze at Meath Park School, with a fire chief estimating “hundreds of thousands” in damage
All students and staff are safe after a fire ripped through Meath Park School on Thursday, about 40 kilometres northeast of Prince Albert.
At least seven fire engines from three departments responded to a blaze, which took hours to put out and sent flames shooting out through air vents in the roof.
The fire started in the school’s canteen at around 10:40, as the recess bells were ringing, said teacher Lorie Zbaraschuk.
The alarm sounded. At first, she said, her class thought it was a lockdown. It was only after the gym teacher spotted smoke that her class began to evacuate.
“You could tell there was light smoke coming out of the canteen,” she said. “You could smell it in the air.”
