Fiddles available for learning in Sucker River

Valerie G. Barnes Connell Jordan/Northern Advocate Ralph Opikokew, (R) demonstrates some of the fingering involved in playing the fiddle.

The community of Sucker River, one of the Lac La Ronge Indian Band remote reserves, bought six fiddles and arranged for fiddle lessons for anyone who was interested.

Ralph Opikokew, who taught music, including fiddling, in the area for many years, came back to offer lessons to a group interested.

While notes were on the white board for the first lesson, Opikokew said, it would not be long before they would not need them anymore.

Music coming from upstairs in the Band Hall in Sucker River sounded awesome to this reporter’s ears as we entered the building.

Plans are being made for future lessons to be held throughout the summer, Opikokew said.

The instruments will be kept by the community, but community members are welcome to join the classes.
