Following the passing of longtime curling official and Prince Albert Sports Hall of Fame inductee Deanna Rindal in November, the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Centre wanted to pay tribute in the best way possible.
They will be paying honour to her from Feb. 28 to March 1, as the centre will be playing host to the first annual Deanna Rindal Memorial Open Doubles Spiel.
“Everything just came together here in the last month,” said Pat Bibby, who is one of the members of the host committee.
“We wanted to get double curling going in Prince Albert and we also wanted to keep Deanna’s name out there for the years to come. (Her husband) Bryan and (her son) Preston were in on it right away as well and we just went from there.”
Unlike doubles events at the Olympics or ones that occur at Curling Canada competitions like the Continental Cup, the event in Prince Albert is open two teams with two women, two men or a man and a woman.
“The only rule changes that people need to know about is that there’s no sweeping between the hog lines and there will also be no power plays, like you see at the big mixed doubles events,” Bibby said.
The entry fee for the 32-team event is $100 per team, with three six-end games guaranteed.
All of the funds that are raised from the bonspiel will be donated to the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital.
“Deanna and Bryan were both really involved with the Children’s Hospital and they wanted to put any of the proceeds that were raised towards them,” Bibby said.
