The main entrance to Little Red River Park has been closed due to rising waters from the Spruce River, the City of Prince Albert announced on Wednesday.

The Water Security Agency (WSA) has removed stop logs on Anglin Lake, which feeds into the Spruce River. Little Red River Park is one of several downstream areas identified as a potential flood area in the very near future.

The park entrance is closed until further notice. The City says it will monitor the situation and re-open the area once the threat has subsided.

Access to Little Red River Park is still available through the upper flats and North Parking Lot.

The WSA says high water levels will be a common sight this summer thanks to record wet conditions in the basin north of Cumberland House and into the Churchill River System.

Peak water levels are expected to hit 268.01 meters by July 25. That’s higher than flood levels in 2013 (267.91 meters) and 2005 (267.69 meters).

The WSA is already preparing for flooding in the community of Cumberland House, located roughly 300 km northeast of Prince Albert. That includes testing flood proofing measures created in 2013.

“Flooding at Cumberland House is very dynamic and can happen in different ways, but as of this time, an evacuation is not anticipated,” reads a WSA media release.
