Two in three family doctors in Saskatchewan at risk of burnout

Rates highest amongst physicians practising outside of Regina and Saskatoon

Doctors in Saskatchewan are facing very high levels of stress, leading to many at risk of burnout, a new survey says.

The survey, conducted by the Saskatchewan Medical Association, found that one out of two specialists and two out of three general practitioners identify as being at risk of burnout.

“Burnout is a very real concern for physicians,” said Dr. Intheran Pillay, SMA president in a news release.

“The data we gathered here would seem to confirm that we have a large number of physicians who are managing, but are signalling a very high level of stress. Many physicians recognize this problem and are ready to work on solutions that will lessen the rate of burnout within their profession.”

Doctors in regional centres showed the highest risk of burnout, with 69 per cent of physicians and specialists responding that they agree with the statement “I think I am at risk of burning out.”
