Saskatchewan’s Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating a fatal collision involving an RCMP vehicle and a pedestrian on Hwy 909 south of Turnor Lake.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours on Thursday, Aug. 29 when an RCMP vehicle struck a 31-year-old man on the highway while travelling south in foggy conditions, the provincial government said in a press release.

A five person SIRT has been deployed to Buffalo Narrows and Turnor Lake to examine police conduct shorly after being notified of the collision at around 6:04 a.m. on Thursday. The final report will be issued within 90 days.

The collision occurred as two RCMP officers were travelling south on Hwy 909 in two separate RCMP trucks. The officers had been in Turnor Lake following reports of a domestic disturbance at around 1:45 a.m.

While at the scene of the domestic disturbance, the officers received reports of a man lying on the road south of Buffalo Narrows on Hwy 155. Roughly four minutes later, another caller phoned to report the man lying on the highway had been struck and killed by a vehicle.

One RCMP member left Turnor Lake to attend to the call about the man lying on the road. The second member left the scene shortly after with one suspect in custody.

While travelling towards Buffalo Narrows, the first RCMP truck struck and killed a 31-year-old man. RCMP members provided first aid and contacted local healthcare providers and EMS, who pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The man was not the same person who was reported lying on the highway south of Buffalo Narrows.
