Saskatchewan Polytechnic and police services in Prince Albert, Saskatoon, Moose Jaw and Regina are warning residents to be on the lookout for a new phishing scam popping up around the province.
Police in Moose Jaw and Regina are investigating complaints after residents reported suspicious emails with “Saskatchewan Polytechnic – Time Jobs Opportunity” or “Document Pending” in the subject line.
In a media release issued on Friday, Saskatchewan Polytechnic said they had no connection with the emails. They advised all residents to delete them promptly, and to avoid replying, clicking on links or opening attachments.
Phishing scams are a form of online fraud where criminals attempt to steal personal information, such as computer passwords or credit card numbers, by posing as a legitimate and trustworthy entity.
Saskatchewan Polytechnic isn’t the only organization targeted by such scams. Earlier this month, Canada Post announced that several fake emails and text messages using their logo and branding were popping up. Those text messages and emails asked users to post contact and payment information to cover outstanding shipping fees.
Anyone who is a target of phishing scams is asked to call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
