Three girls from the Prince Albert Northern Bears will represent their hockey team and their province on the national stage in Quebec City, come November.

Goalie Ryan Fontaine, defender Hannah Koroll and forward Kate Ball were selected to join Team Saskatchewan’s under-18 female squad to play for the national women’s championship in La Belle province, from Nov. 1 to Nov. 5 this year.

“We’re happy to have some representation on the team,” Bears head coach Jeff Willoughby said. “But I’m disappointed that it’s only three (players).

“I’m not the one picking the team, but I would have selected all six,” he said, referencing Miranda Heidt, Camryn Amundson and Abby Soyko, all three of whom were cut after tryouts for the provincial squad this past weekend.

“All six that went (to team tryouts), they tried their hardest,” he said of the girls.

Soyko ranked seventh overall last year in Midget AAA girls for goals scored (18) and 11th for points (31).

The opportunity for the three to showcase their skills in front of scouts is a big one, Willoughby noted.

“There are college scouts at every game, and Hockey Canada does its own scouting for its 40-person camp and its future prospects camp,” he said.
