Escaped inmate turns himself in

An inmate who had been on the run after escaping from the minimum-security unit at Saskatchewan Penitentiary turned himself in Sunday afternoon.

At about 3 p.m. on January 6, Steven Briggs turned himself in to staff members at Bowden Institution, a medium-security federal prison located about 30 km south of Red Deer, Alta.

He had previously been spotted driving a dark-coloured Correctional Service Canada (CSC) pickup truck near Yorkton.

Briggs had been at large since December 31, 2018.

CSC is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incient.

“Ensuring the safety and security of institutions, staff, and public remains the highest priority in the operations of the federal correctional system,” CSC said in a press release.
