Saskatoon’s Kim Brown is tough to beat at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course in early June.
Brown, who has won the last two Ladies’ Lobstick tournaments at the Waskesiu Golf Course, captured her fourth straight Ladies’ Northern title at the Cooke Municipal Golf Course Sunday.
“I love this course,” Brown said. “I grew up playing here so I find that I’m very comfortable out here, which I think plays a part in my success lately.
“It’s also a fun tournament to kick off the year. We all look forward to playing and I think that enthusiasm is something that you see throughout the field.”
Brown shot eight-over par for the two days to win the championship flight over Pauline McDougall by seven strokes, while Sherry Anderson finished in third place to capture the senior championship.
“I was really happy with my game on Saturday and even though I was only four shots worse today (Sunday), I felt like I played a lot worse, but that’s golf sometimes,” Anderson joked.
“It’s nice to get that first tournament under your belt as the season gets underway. I haven’t been able to golf as much as I would like after the long curling season (which saw her win a second straight World Women’s Senior Championship in Norway) but that suits me just fine. It does mean a little bit shorter of a golf season though.”
Anderson and McDougall were also involved in a fundraising event on Friday, as they shaved their heads in support of fellow golfer Carole Rucks as she’s currently battling cancer.
“I was honoured to be a part of it,” Anderson said. “Carole’s a good friend of ours and we wanted to do something to help support her.”
A total of $13,000 has been raised from the event as of Sunday morning, with the proceeds going towards the Victoria Hospital’s chemotherapy unit.
“I think the entire evening was a great reminder for all of us as to why we’re all here,” Brown said. “We come together to support one another and the community.”
Barb McKay was also honoured during the tournament as she received the Nadia Gisi Memorial Spirit Award, which goes to the participant that best exemplifies the spirit of the event.
