On Thursday evening the Saskatchewan Rivers School Division notified the public that WP Sandin School in Shellbrook would be moving to remote learning (Level 4) from May 25 to 31.

“The Health Authority is working to contain some community transmission events in Shellbrook and now the schools have been significantly impacted,” the release stated.

They explained that previously many WP Sandin students were isolating because of community exposures, but now all classes (except the Grade 10 class) will be under isolation orders until midnight on May 31.

With regards to the move to Level 4 the division noted that that May 21 is a previously scheduled non-school day and May 24 is the Victoria Day holiday so in total students will be in remote learning for 5 school days and are expected to return to in-person learning on Tuesday June 1.

On Tuesday evening the division had already noted that a case of COVID-19 has been connected to an individual or individuals at the school.

As well, there is no evidence that the case reported Tuesday was acquired or transmitted at school.

Once the division was informed of the positive COVID-19 test results communication was shared with the classrooms/cohorts, the connected staff, as well as with the school community.

The learning program will continue remotely only for those students and staff affected while in-person learning will continue for the rest of the school.

As is the circumstance in all reports of COVID-19 in the division due to privacy concerns, further details of the original reported case will not be shared.

They explained that both the local Medical Health Officer and the provincial Chief Medical Health Officer continue to indicate that because of the protocols in place, schools are safe and are not significant source of transmission.
They explained that we all share the responsibility to minimize the risk of COVID transmission.

“The division deeply appreciates the support that students, parents and community members have demonstrated.”
